The Importance of Water

by Dr. Dzemal Hadzismajlovic

Not only do the thirsty seek water but water also seeks the thirsty. (Jalal ad-Din ar-Rumi, 1237)

There are 85 places in the holy Qur'an where water is mentioned. Water purifies, calms and improves the human beings confidence and removes disturbances coming from Satan. This information is based on the Qur'anic verse:

"Remember He covered you with a sort of drowsiness to give you calm as from Himself and He caused rain to descend on you from heaven to clean you therewith, to remove from you the stain of satan, to strengthen your hearts and to plant your feet firmly therewith." (Qur'an 8:11)

This verse is extraordinarily important because it proclaims the dual character of water: exceptional material and spritual performances. This could be one of the reasons for the extraordinary high rank of water, amongst the blessings proclaimed by God. It highlights that the use of water as a purifying agent for people should not be limited to its washing power only. Exceptional results in the improvement of health have been demonstrated by the correction of the water intake as will be explained in this study.

The body normally has a balance of static electricity, and the physiology of a healthy body is closely related to this electrical balance. Many factors in atmoshperic conditions, plastic clothing and products, adversely affect this delicate balance. Painful illnesses, irritability and facial wrinkles are the best known results. Healing by acupuncture and, in certain respects, physiotherapy redress this imbalance of static electricity; but this effect is possible to avoid simply by taking a shower several times a day. Most people are vulnerable to demoralisation during periods where there is a lack of the water. Dehydration decreases the body's metabolism as well as the emotional charge. The thoughts are not clear, the initiative goes down and hopelessness contaminates the soul. In the Qur'an, water is proclaimed as the agent for removal of Satan's disturbances (illusions, lies, vanity and all other sources of evil) which generates sin and the loss of salaam (peace). This explanation gives the explicit reasons for ablution (1). Yahya (as) was probably the first one who introduced ablution. Later on, the ablution was corrupted by the loss and the change of Isa (as)'s message, to become an infrequent ritual of the Christian practice.

It is very well known that contact with water decreases anxiety and stress. The shower and the water tub are frequently used in therapeutic treatments in many mental hospitals. The people know the benefit of this treatment but not many of them wonder why water possesses such power. Even if they try to find out the reason, it will be founded on the acquisition of the consequences: - the objective physico-chemical and biochemical parameters of the patient.

The unborne child is completely protected by the water layer in the mother's stomach during pregnancy. There are a number of investigations of the labour and delivering of babies under the water. Approximately 10,000 labours in water, with half delivering under water, have occurred in 219 hospitals in England and Wales in 1992 and 1993 (1). It was shown that this practice included reduced use of pharmacological pain relief, acceleration of labour, less trauma and an increased feeling of control over labour for the mother. In addition, the baby may benefit from reduced exposure to pain relief drugs and from a gentler birth (2).

One therapeutic technique, for quick psycho-physiological recovery, involved a patient floating on the layer of salty water without any external sound and light. Such an environment is very good for learning and healing.
