Life in Hell (Jahannam)

by Ahmad H. Sakr

Truly Hell is as a place of ambush, -- (Surah 78:Verse 21)

Life in Hell is a miserable life. It is the worst life that a person can imagine and think of. It is prepared to be the abode of the sinners and the wrongdoers. These are the ones who refused to repent and stayed obstinate on the wrong path.

After the Day of Judgment, people are to visit Hell whether they are good or bad. Each is to zoom towards Hell to see what it looks like or what type of life is there. Those who are wrongdoers. will enter Hell, but those who are good will pass around it towards Paradise. This type of information is mentioned in the Qur'an in Surah Maryam regarding the wrongdoers and the good ones.

Not one of you but will pass over it: This is, with your Lord, a decree which must be accomplished. But We shall save those who guarded against evil, and We shall have the wrongdoers. therein, (humbled) to their knees. (Surah 19:Verse 71-72)

As far as the good people are concerned, Allah (subanawa ta'ala) says in Surah Al-Imran the following:

Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of life): for the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception. (Surah 3:Verse 185)

There are a group of people whose wrong-doings are many. They do not deserve to enter Paradise. At the same time, their good-doings are less than normal. This group is to be on the waiting list. They cannot enter Paradise and they are not to be pushed into Hell. They are the people of A'raf. They stay on the waiting list with distress, fear, agony, and anxiety. They need more good deeds to enter Paradise.

They are to stay under psychological distress till someone upon whom they inflicted injustice to forgive them. The description about these people is mentioned in Qur'an in Surah Al-A'raf. The following is said about them:

Between them shall be a veil, and on the heights will be men who would know every one by his marks: they will call out to the companions of the Garden, 'Peace on you:' They will not have entered, but they will have an assurance (thereof).

When their eyes shall be turned towards the Companions of the Fire, they will say: 'Our Lord! send us not to the company of the wrongdoers.

The men on the Heights will call to certain men whom they will know from their marks, saying: 'Of what profit to you were your hoards and your arrogant ways?

Behold! are these not the men whom you swore that God with His Mercy would never bless? Enter you the Garden: No fear shall be on you, nor shall you grieve. (Surah 7:Verse 46 - 49)

The life of Hell is a life of punishment, a life of torture and a life of persecution. The following is a summary of the type of life in Hell:

1. People are to be the fuel of Hell. One may read in Qur'an (2:217), (3:10), (72:15), (2:24) and (66:6). In Surah Al-Imran, Allah says:

They are themselves but fuel for the Fire. (Surah 3:Verse 10)

2. In Hell, people will be blind, mute and deaf. In Surah Al-Isra', (Night Journey) Allah says:

On the Day of Judgment, We shall gather them together, prone of their faces, blind, dumb and deaf: Their abode will be Hell. Every time it shows abatement, We shall increase for them the fierceness of the Fire. (Surah 17:Verse 97)
