Recipients of Zakah

There are seven categories of the beneficiaries of Zakah

1. The needy (The needy is one who does not has basic needs fulfilled.)

2. The indigent (They are the people who are destitute and helpless to the extreme, yet they are so self-respecting that they would neither beg nor implore others for help; they might be struggling for their livelihood but due to lack of resources do not earn enough to make both ends meet, yet true condition to the people)

3. Zakah collectors (They are the official agents who are appointed to collect Zakah and 'Usher, disburse it to the needy and maintain accounts)

4. Ransoming of slaves (If there are no slaves at certain time, expenditure on this head will remain suspended)

5. Helping the debtors (This concerns those people who are heavily under debt and cannot save enough to pay off their debts)

6. The way of Allah (This include help to pilgrims to ka'bah who cannot afford to go for Hajj but he/she is not allowed to ask for that, the students who are acquiring religious knowledge and are needy, and the religious institutions where students are studying Islam and this is the best place to give Zakah)

7. Hospitality of the way-farer (This refers to the one whether he is well off and rich at home, can be helped with Zakah money if he is stands in need of such help while on a journey)

People who are not entitled to receive Zakah

The following categories of people are not entitled to receive Zakah; if Zakah is paid to them, it will not be valid:

1. Parents, grandparents and others in the line of ascent.

2. Children grandchildren and others in the line of descent.

3. A woman's own husband

4. A man's own wife

It is important in the payment of Zakah to make that person owner of that Zakah money which has been paid to him/her and it is also important to know that one cannot pay Zakah to mosque. Intention is also very important. Do not pay your Zakah to any non-religious sects or institutions. Pay your Zakah to Ahle Sunnah Wal Jamah and Ahle Tariqat people and their institutions only otherwise your Zakah will not be valid. Zakat Ul-Fitr

This is a type of charity that must be paid by every Muslim, young, old, and male, female, free and slave, at the end of the month of fasting (Ramadan). (Bukhari, Muslim). It is wajib upon every one mentioned above if he/she possesses more than his/her basic needs (Hajateh asleigh) The purpose of this charity is to purify one who fasts from any indecent act or speech and to help the poor and needy. If one has not paid yet in his life he/she still can pay (Must pay now) before his/her death. But it is Sunnah to pay before Eid Ul Fitr Salah. The amount of Sadaqah is one SA or money equals to one SA (SA is equals to approximately three kilograms) of wheat, barley, raisins, dry cottage cheese, rice, corn or similar items considered as basic foods. Recipients are same as Zakah except number three as mentioned above under the title (Recipients of Zakah) For more details please contact IAA.
